Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our welding services, certifications, service area, and quoting process.
General
- What areas do you serve?
- We serve the Halifax Regional Municipality (Zone 1) and surrounding Nova Scotia — including Lunenburg, Truro, the South Shore, and the Annapolis Valley. Zone 4 (Cape Breton and northern Nova Scotia) is available by arrangement. See our service areas page for full zone details.
- Do you come to us, or do we need to bring equipment to you?
- We come to you. D&D Welding is a fully mobile operation. We bring all welding equipment to your vessel, plant, or facility — no transport required on your end.
- How quickly can you respond?
- Zone 1–2 emergencies: same-day or next morning. Standard scheduled work: confirmed within 1–2 business days of quote approval. Non-emergency inquiries receive a response within 2–4 business hours.
Marine Welding
- Can you weld on aluminum?
- Yes. We weld TIG and MIG on both steel and aluminum for marine applications — including hull repairs, superstructure, deck hardware, and fuel tanks.
- Does the vessel need to be hauled out?
- No. We perform dockside welding. The vessel stays in the water, which significantly minimizes your downtime.
- What happens if my vessel can't leave dock — emergency situation?
- Call directly: (902) 609-6959. We prioritize emergency marine calls and provide same-day response within Zone 1–2. Emergency work is billed at 1.5× the standard rate with a 3-hour minimum — confirmed with you before work begins.
Sanitary & Food-Grade
- Are you certified for food-grade welding?
- Yes. D&D Welding holds CWB certification and uses dedicated stainless tooling with no cross-contamination from carbon steel equipment. We provide before/after documentation and a completion certificate for every food-grade job.
- Do you provide documentation for compliance records?
- Yes. Every sanitary job includes before/after photography and a completion certificate suitable for CFIA compliance files and internal facility audits.
- Can you work within our production schedule?
- We accommodate planned maintenance windows, scheduled shutdown periods, and off-production hours. For production-line failures, emergency response is available with priority scheduling.
Industrial
- What materials do you weld?
- Carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Structural, pipe, and plate in common grades and specifications.
- Do you provide custom fabrication?
- Yes. We fabricate custom brackets, supports, guards, frames, skids, platforms, handrails, and guardrails. Custom fabrication is quoted per project based on scope.
Quotes & Pricing
- How do I get a quote?
- Submit a request through our Request a Quote page, or call/email directly. We review every request personally and respond within 1 business day. Complex projects requiring a site assessment are handled in a follow-up call.
- How is pricing structured?
- Labor is billed hourly by sector (Marine $120–$140/hr, Sanitary $140–$160/hr, Industrial $110–$130/hr). Materials are recovered at cost plus a handling markup. Travel fees apply for Zone 2–4 work. A written quote is provided for all jobs over $800. All rates are confirmed before work begins.
- What are your payment terms?
- First-time clients: 50% deposit on quote approval, balance on completion. Established accounts: Net-30 invoicing. Emergency calls: Full payment within 5 business days of invoice. No surprises — all terms are stated in your quote.
- Do you charge for estimates?
- Phone and email consultations are at no charge. Site assessments for complex jobs may carry a minimum charge if no work results — this is always disclosed upfront before we visit.
